A big mess = a big room!

We have wanted a big room for a long time. There are problems with zoning here, long story, so we decided that the only effective way to do it would be to take out the wall between the family room and the bedroom in the front of the house. This first picture is the bedroom. That corner is where the wall was diaganol because it held an old abandoned chimney. You will notice that the walls are the lath and plaster. This part of the house is over 100 years old! We found a postcard in the wall dated 1928.

This is the front room side of the wall. We needed to take out the stove and all of the rock work on the wall and the floor.

This is the stove gone, the chimney down and the wall removed, except for the 2 x 4's, because it is a bearing wall. The soot was unbelievable. We had to keep all the furniture in the rooms, draped, because we don't have anywhere else to put them. The soot permeated everything! You could walk in the room and without touching anything, come out black.

Rachel and Endrit, and Sara were helping with the propping up the ceiling, removing the wall supports and putting up the beam. We were all DIRTY! You should have seen England, but I forgot to take a picture of her.

Stan is redoing the electrical in the old wall. We figured it would be the best place to put it since there were already spaces there without putting any more holes in the wall.

This is the before picture of the last one, which shows no electricity and the hole in the ceiling before it got new sheet rock.

The chimney pipe had to be removed, which made a nice hole in the roof. Stan and Endrit are looking down from the roof into the living room.

Stan and Endrit are 'fixing' the hole in the roof with some, thankfully, left over tin from when we re roofed in 1998 when the addition was added in the back.

Looks like the project is coming along nicely. You will need to post some photos when Richard puts in the hardwood flooring. That will be a nice bigger room to hang out in.
